Mastiff “Governor” antique print. Walsh c1878
$50.00
Antique print of Mr Lukey's Mastiff "Governor".
Original hand-coloured wood engraving circa 1878 by Butterworth and Heath after a sketch by L. Wells for "The Dogs of the British Islands" first published circa 1867 by John Henry Walsh (1810-1888). Most of the excellent illustrations for this publication were given an appropriate background, that adds considerable charm to each animal study.
Walsh was educated for the medical profession, and practised for some years as a surgeon. He was passionate about dogs and was expert in their management and the treatment of their illnesses. He loved field sports and became a sporting writer. He wrote many articles and books under the pen-name “Stonehenge”. "The Dogs of the British Islands – being a Series of Articles (with illustrations) on their Various Breeds.." was reissued a number of times through to 1886. In 1856 Walsh joined the staff of "The Field" journal, and by the end of the following year became its editor.
