North Esk River, Corra Linn, Launceston antique print. A region now famous for the Corra Linn Distillery.
Original wood engraving from "Australian Pictures, drawn with pen and pencil", printed in London c1886 by William Clowes & Sons Limited for The Religious Tract Society. Written by Howard Willoughby (1839-1908), "Australian Pictures" featured many Australian historical views that appeared nowhere else.
Howard Willoughby came to Melbourne from England with his family in 1857. He joined 'The Age' newspaper as junior reporter in 1861 and transferred to 'The Argus' a year later. Willoughby became Australia's first war correspondent when he joined the British troops in the New Zealand Wars in 1862. After being sent to Western Australia, Willoughby wrote at length during 1865 against penal transportation to Australia. He reported parliamentary proceedings in Victoria from 1866 until 1869 when he was appointed the first editor of the Melbourne 'Daily Telegraph'. After marrying in 1870 Willoughby and his wife had five children. He rejoined 'The Argus' as chief of the news department in 1877. In 1882 Willoughby became chief political writer, and in 1891 published "Australian Federation, its Aims and its Possibilities". He became editor of 'The Argus' in 1898 but resigned after being paralysed by a stroke. Much respected, Willoughby continued to write until his death, which was reported 'with unfeigned regret'.
