$295.00

Fashionably dressed lady at ease on Amalfi coast. Robe, de Worth (Outfit designed by Charles Worth)

Not quite antique (98 years old), this is very beautiful original fashion pochoir c1922 by George Barbier (1882-1932) for La Gazette du Bon Ton (Journal of Good Style). Between 1912 and 1925 (with a break during World War I), the finest fashion illustrators introduced the latest fashions by prominent French designers. Barbier was one of the four regular contributors for this exclusive periodical. He was most influential in the style of artwork, and his fashion illustrations are most sought after today. George Barbier pochoirs show the latest fashion within charming fashion 'narratives' that convey the mood of each style beautifully.

The portrayal of fashion by the pochoir method was perfected by skilful artists in France, and pochoir, the French word for stencil, has been adopted worldwide to describe the labour-intensive process of cutting many separate stencils for successive applications by hand of ink, gouache and watercolour.
