Tallis, Western Hemisphere decorative map (pair with previous)

$25.00

Wonderfully decorative Western Hemisphere Heritage Editions map (c1851). One of the most decorative maps ever printed.

This is a beautiful reproduction from the hand-coloured steel-engraved map published by Tallis circa 1851. Among the last decorative map publishers, Tallis and Company surpassed themselves with the embellishment of this map (and its pair, the previous map).

The circle of the map is surrounded by small vignette engravings of people and native fauna of the regions shown, with each image separated and further adorned by intertwining of vines. The publishing firm of Tallis flourished from 1835 to 1860, and were renowned for their fine steel-engraved maps and prints. Tallis maps were among the last decorative maps published. Finely engraved Illustrations and borders on maps were slow to produce and expensive. With a selection of small scenes of cities, people, fauna or flora of the region, these vignettes as well as the map were surrounded by wonderfully decorative borders.

One of a pair, with previous item, equally superb print of Eastern Hemisphere. The pair of Eastern Hemisphere and Western Hemisphere maps are offered earlier in this section as a single item at a reduced price. And there is a single Eastern Hemisphere map (of a few years later with shipping route around the world).

Size as originally published, 28 x 36cm (11 x 14 inches).
