Italy antique map by Robert de Vaugondy c1758.
Italie Par le S. Robert de Vaugondy Geog. Ord du Roi, de S.M. Polon. Duc de Lorraine et de Bar, et de la Societé royale de Nancy et censeur Royal. Gravé par E. Dussy. (Italy by Robert de Vaugondy Senior, Ordinary Geographer of the King, of His Polish Majesty, Duke of Lorraine and Duke of Bar, and of the Royal Society of Nancy, and Royal Sensor. Engraved by Dussy.
Original copperplate-engraved map with ornamental cartouche (decoratively-framed title piece) and contemporary outline colour, by Didier Robert de Vaugondy (1723-1786) and his father Gilles Robert de Vaugondy (1688-1766) published in Paris circa 1758 by Boudet (the King’s printer), for one of the first atlases to be based on scientific surveys, in the tradition of Guillaume De l’Isle (1625-1726) and Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon d’Anville (1697-1782).
This is a fine antique map on thick hand-made paper, with a strong intaglio impression, with central vertical fold as issued. It has a few foxing spots around the edges and a couple of small ones within the map border at the base. These will not detract from the map once it is framed.
Page: 290 x 417 (11 3/8 x 16 1/2 inches). To border measure 240 x 280mm (9 ½ x 11 inches).
