Antique print of Chen albatus, Irish Snow Goose, c1877.

Beautiful original hand-coloured lithograph of Cassin's Snow Goose by eminent bird illustrator and naturalist John Gerrard Keulemans (1842-1912). This bird is shown at one-third size, and was recorded in Ireland.

Born in Rotterdam, Keulemans showed early skill at depicting wildlife accurately and with sympathetic style. His beautiful hand-coloured lithographs are considered by many to have been the finest produced. In 1869 fellow ornithologist and colleague of John Gould, Richard Bowdler-Sharp persuaded Keulemans to move to London which was the centre at the time for beautifully illustrated natural history plate books.

This lithograph is in fine condition. Full page measures 315 x 250mm (12 3/8 x 9 1/2 inches).
