GOLD DIGGINGS in AUSTRALIA. Night scene at the diggings.

Distraction for the thief behind the tent.. "In this way he provoked us to follow him to a considerable distance in the woods; when, with a loud and wild cooie, a call answering to our hilloa, he flung himself into an open space, and sped like an arrow from our sight."

Original wood engraving by W.A. Nicholls 'from authentic sketches taken in the colony' (by S.T. Gill) for John Sherer’s “The Gold-Finder of Australia – How he went, How he fared, How he made his fortune” published in London circa 1853. London-based Sherer added descriptive captions below each engraving from ST Gill's sketches of the Australian goldfields.

The top right corner of this page has been torn – and repaired with conservation tape, so that there is little affect to the image. (If you would like further images of this corner, please email us.) Engraved page measures 13 x22 cm (5 x 8.5 inches). A group of these, framed on the wall, would be an interesting historical statement.
