$3,850.00

Beautiful gold-framed classical engraving c.1800 of superb Raphael frescoes from two sides of a pilaster (pillar) in the Loggia to the Pope's private residence at the Vatican. Exquisitely engraved and brilliantly hand-coloured with opaque gouache watercolour, this is an original copperplate engraving.

Raphael Vatican artwork devised for the frescoes by the High Renaissance artist, Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino (1483-1520), and painted by his artisans during the last two years of Raphael's life. Superb engraving of a pair of Raphael pilaster frescoes for Logge del Vaticano (Loggia of the Vatican), published in Rome c.1787 by Niccola de Antoni and in Paris c.1802 by Pierre Philippe Choffard. Pairs of the pilaster frescos were engraved, half the size of the grand single pilasters published in Rome between 1772 and 1777 for Delle Loggie di Raffaello nel Vaticano (Of the Loggia by Raphael at the Vatican).
