Johann Theodor de Bry (1561-1623) carefully grouped “flower portraits”. His illustrations were noted for their elegant form and sumptuous colour. They were engraved on copper plates between 1611 and 1614, at a time when appreciation and cultivation of flowers was undergoing a revolution. Botanical art flourished. Common garden flowers were keenly admired and often painted.
