Cook’s chart of the North Queensland coastline, with uncharted sections where Cook’s Endeavour ran aground when it struck a rock in one of the Hope Islands (actually coral of the Great Barrier Reef of North Queensland). Jettisoning cargo, Cook’s ship was nursed off the reef and north into the Endeavour River for repair, near where Cooktown is today.

Great Britain needed a new Colony for convicts and free settlers, and possible extension of trade opportunities, so Lieutenant James Cook was sent to the southern hemisphere on his three voyages of discovery between 1768 and 1779. Cook was to search for the great southern continent which previous European explorers had surmised must exist.
