Superb marine scene finely engraved by the fine etcher-engraver, George Cooke (1781-1834), after a painting by the eminent marine artist, J.M.W. Turner, R.A. (1775-1851). This is a Published in London by Virtue and Company in 1825 (with later hand-colour). Larger than the usual steel engravings of the period, Turner apparently approved this series of engravings after his paintings.
Turner’s maritime scenes are some of the finest marine art ever painted. Fortunately, the popularity of his paintings resulted in publication of steel engravings for greater circulation. Turner exhibited at the British Institution between 1806 and 1846 and exhibited at the Royal Academy until 1850.
