Antique print of Gold Diggings in Australia c1853. Religious instruction..
"Oh! how he showed the white of his eyes; whilst his auditory seemed variously affected by his air of sanctity, and his strongly-marked style of denouncing sin." – with varying responses from his parishioners.
Hand-coloured original wood engraving by W.A. Nicholls 'from authentic sketches taken in the colony' by S.T. Gill. published in London circa 1853 for John Sherer’s “The Gold-Finder of Australia – How he went, How he fared, How he made his fortune”. London-based Sherer added amusing descriptive captions below each engraving that was done from ST Gill's sketches for lithographs of the Australian gold-rushes.
Engraved page measures 13 x22 cm (5 x 8.5 inches). A group of these, framed on the wall, would be both an interesting historical statement.
