Striking large orange Tiger Lily botanical print.
Reproduction from the hand-coloured stipple engraving by Lemaire after a painting by Pierre Joseph Redouté (1759-1840) for Redouté's Choix des plus belles fleurs et des plus beaux fruits (Choice of the most beautiful flowers and fruit) published in Paris between 1827 and 1830.
Redouté was official court artist to Queen Marie Antoinette (until she was imprisoned), and from 1805 appointed as artist to the court of Empress Josephine. Napoleon's interest in gardening and foreign discoveries, combined with Josephine's dedication to her wonderful garden at Malmaison, and patronage of the superb artistic talent of Redouté, resulted in some of the finest illustrations of Australian botanical specimens ever produced.
Born in Belgium, Redouté moved to Paris in 1782 and attracted the attention of wealthy amateur botanist, Charles Louis l'Heritier de Brutelle, who commissioned Redouté to engrave more than 50 plates for his Stirpes novae published in Paris in 1784-5. L'Heritier went to London in 1786 and Redouté joined him, collaborating on his study of rare plants growing at Kew for Sertum anglicum, published in 1788.
After becoming skilled at it in England, Redouté introduced stipple engraving to France where he dominated botanical painting between 1790 and 1830. Redouté was appointed draughtsman to the Cabinet of Marie-Antoinette just before the Revolution, and after the revolution he and his younger brother Henri-Joseph went the Musee d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris. Pierre Joseph worked on watercolours and drawings for numerous botanical publications, and in 1793 he was appointed to the Jardin des Plantes.
Napoleon Bonaparte had always been interested in botany and science. His first wife, Josephine, acquired a large collection of plants, including many roses, for her garden at Malmaison. In 1805 Pierre-Joseph was appointed court and flower painter to Empress Josephine, and illustrated the rare plants she grew in the famous Malmaison gardens.
